The Shoogly Pencil Club

I’ve always loved children’s art, their imaginings and how they perceive the world. So it’s been an absolute joy to volunteer at the library and bring arty experiences to kids. The Shoogly Pencil Club is such a laugh and some amazing artwork has been created.

In our sessions, we’ve so far explored up-cycling with newspapers, magazines and maps and made barcode bees. We’ve tried out fun materials like watercolour pencils, the ever-popular metallic pens and oh-so-messy charcoal. The kids have created wonders and it’s brilliant to see their imaginations in action. I wanted The Shoogly Pencil Club to be a guide for ideas and let the kids explore it in any way they are comfortable with. It turns out googly eyes are always a must-have finishing touch!

Cacti, chickens, monsters, aliens, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Bob peeping from a doughnut – there’s been a wonderful variety of things drawn. I particularly love all the shoogly pencils that we decorated onto our art supply lockers.

A big thank you to Orkney Library for allowing me to create arty messes with kids. Also, to my lovely Mum for helping out and being so fun. The children themselves have been absolute stars and I’m very proud of them.

After a difficult summer, I’m pleased to say there is another session on the horizon – keep an eye on Orkney Library’s Facebook page and notice board for future events. You can also see updates on my social media.

Of course, I’d always encourage you to shoogle some pencils at home too!

Thanks for reading,
